WHAT IS A PORTFOLIO?
A portfolio can have many purposes including providing
feedback on students' learning or for employment and continued
growth purposes. According to the Northwest Evaluation Association,
a portfolio is "a purposeful collection of teacher's work
that exhibits teacher's efforts, progress and achievements-this
may be exemplified by students' artifacts selected from the teacher's
classroom which demonstrate the teacher's efforts. In turn, there
must be criteria for selecting contents and evidence of self-reflection
and growth."
Your portfolio is a document which will be used throughout your teaching career. I encourage you to develop a portfolio which reflects how and what you have learned from a variety of perspectives. Your portfolio will be used for job interviews and you will continually add to it as you progress through various classes, student teaching, and your teaching. Good luck and now you get to apply your knowledge of standards, assessment and "walk your talk" in terms of educational philosophy.
We will develop as Webfolio so that possible employers, your students and you can access. I encourage you to develop a Webfolio which contains the following categories of growth:
1) Table of Contents
2) Resume--link to the website
provided by the NWU Career Center which has your resume (you do
NOT need to draft your resume in Pagemill.
3) Teaching Philosophy-keep to
one page or less and emphasize how you will know that students
are
learning in terms of attitude and achievement gains.
4) Evidence of Students' Learning--Evidence
could include students' papers, journals, projects, use of
technology (ie., Hyperstudio, Website, Persuasion or Powerpoint),
scanning images, students' portfolios,
etc. Only include students' work.
5) Evidence of Teachers' Learning--Products
could include unit and/or lesson, lessons which focus on
multiculture and/or adaptations for students with exceptionalities
(ie., LD, BD, Gifted, At Risk, etc), other projects or products
from practicum or student teaching (ie., student evaluations);
videotaped lessons which we will digitize and place on web; demonstrated
proficiencies in integrating instructional technology (website
development-ED 244 or 187; Persuasion; Pagemaker, etc)
6.) Technology Proficiencies--For this page, you can upload your Hyperstudio, Webpage, PageMaker, and PowerPoint displays.
7.) A Plan for Future Growth--a
very brief path or set of goals (one page or less) for professional
development.
Each section should consist of documents and/or products which are authentic evidence of your under-standings or abilities as well as evidence of growth. Note, your portfolio should reflect what you most want people to know about your students' learning and your teaching so purposefully select your artifacts for various sections.

You will need to complete your Webfolio by clearly developing materials for each of the seven sections before it will be placed on ED Server. I will then maintain on the server at http://education/ for at least one year after your graduating from NWU.
